Research shows that entering pregnancy in a healthy state provides for the best outcomes for both you and your baby.

The best thing you can do for your baby’s health is to optimise your health before  becoming pregnant.

Most of us spend more time preparing and researching to buy a car or any other product than we do about pregnancy or becoming a parent.

Some of the things you can do to prepare for pregnancy include:

  • Weight control. Reduce or increase your weight within a healthy BMI range.
  • Eat healthily before becoming pregnant. Become familiar with the MOH recommendations for a healthy diet, which includes: fibre, a serving of protein each day, calcium, iron rich food, plenty of water, 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit a day, foods with a high GI in preference for low GI, reducing your fat and sugar intake.
  • Moderate exercise which should average out to half an hour a day dedicated to some form of exercise.
  • Stop smoking and reduce or stop your alcohol intake.
  • Don’t take drugs
  • Check with your GP about any medication you are on to see whether it is safe to take if you become pregnant
  • Have your vaccines, such as rubella and pertussis up-to-date.
  • If you have any existing medical conditions discuss how these may affect your pregnancy with your GP.
  • Take folic acid.
  • Get 10 mins of sunshine a day on your skin, (better than taking a pill!)
  • Get to know your body and your menstrual cycles
  • Learn a relaxation technique e.g. yoga, meditation self hypnosis, pilates.
  • Read up about pregnancy, and becoming a parent. So you know and understand some of the changes and challenges that you will be facing
