New Zealand Model of Midwifery Care

New Zealand midwifery care is based on the Treaty of Waitangi partnership model, where both you and your midwife have rights and responsibilities within this framework of care.

  • Your midwife’s role is to provide safe midwifery care based on your informed choices. She will provide you with the information you need to be able to make informed decisions.  Your role in this partnership is to make the decisions for your care based on the information you receive and knowledge and information you bring to the partnership.

  • Midwifery care is holistic, incorporating aspects of your physical, mental, spiritual and cultural health and well-being.
  • In our practice we actualise the partnership model of care by providing one-to-one midwifery care. What this means for you is you have your own midwife throughout your pregnancy labour and birth and post-natal period.
  • We will provide you with choice through information and education.
  • Midwifery care falls within primary healthcare. That means our scope of practice that we are legally licensed to practice in is in health and wellness. Part of our job is to ensure that you and your baby are healthy and well and if we identify anything outside of our scope of practice then we are able to make appropriate referrals for specialised or secondary care, with your informed consent.
  • We are legally required to keep records of all our assessments and information. This should be available to you at all times and you will be provided with a permanent record of your journey at the end of your care.
  • Each of us in our practice uses different ways of keeping records. Your own midwife will advise you of how she will keep your notes and make them available to you.
  • New Zealand maternity care is guided by the National Maternity Referral Guidelines. This is a set of national guidelines that make recommendations for specific circumstances when referral is either recommended or a transfer of responsibility of care is warranted.

Midwives are the ideal health professionals to provide primary maternity care to New Zealand women. The midwifery model of care is holistic weaving together the physical, emotional, spiritual and the family, to provide individual care to meet your needs.
